Electric Avenue

Electric Avenue is a street located in the Brixton neighborhood of London and is called that because it was one of the first streets in the UK to have electric lighting. Guyanese-British singer Eddy Grant originally wrote and recorded Electric Avenue in response to The 1981 Brixton Uprising, in which the largely Afro-Caribbean community faced off against the largely white police force to protest widespread police brutality and racism.
When Donald Trump ran for President of The United States in 2020, his campaign used Electric Avenue in one of their videos. Upon learning this, Eddy Grant promptly filed to sue the fuck out of Trump, a person who embodies the exact opposite of the principles the song represents. Today, after four years, a federal judge ruled in favor of Eddy Grant and he is now another name on the long list of people Donald Trump owes restitution.
In honor of Eddy Grant’s victory and as an excuse to say “Fuck Donald Trump” yet again, here is Electric Avenue.
